Little Things We Did Not Know...

Given the fact that both Beth I use trees in the production of our Hand Made Wares I thought it would be interesting to share this with you.
How tough were these guys? When the Northwest logging industry was still young...

Just look at the length of the hand saw they needed...

...and look at the size of the heavy duty axes...

The work required very strong and courageous men...

After a tree was felled the real work began - a week or more to cut it up...

Maneuvering the logs down the mountain to the train was a complex job...

Some of the logs were larger than the train engine...

A hollowed out log became the company's mobile office... andHollowed out logs were also used to house and feed the crews...

I aquired this last picture from my mother over the holidays. When the trains could no longer do the job or the snow was too deep and the the tracks were covered they would add horses to the front of the engines and travel very slowly. My great great great grandfather is the gentleman on the top left of the log haul. I had NO IDEA !

Samplers Country and Monahan Papers have added new sales representatives. We are now proudly represented by Artistic Papers Representatives in Colorado to the West Coast. We will be with B.C. Fritzke and his group. You might see us in Denver next to Sterling Publishing. We will keep you posted as that develops.
We have also added the team of Max Bentley's Rusty Blades and will now be represented in the Chicago Gift Mart and The Minneapolis Gift Mart. We will update the web sites with showroom locations, times and dates.
OUR WONDERFUL NEWS IS you will find our EGG LINE in Atlanta with our dear friend Margeurite. Owner of Cheesecloth and Buttermilk. She is the sweetest gal EVER!!! We will update the booth location and show information on the web site.

Its September 1st. WOO HOO. Don't you just LOVE this time of year. Its still really hot but I simply love fall decorating. We did a few new paper goodies and dried some mandarin orange slices. I have to say the mandarin oranges are even more fragrant than the regular sliced oranges we do and these are so so cute. I did a new some new paper designs which are available in 11" X 17", 13" X 19" and in wrap rolls of 24" X 36". The wrap rolls are always available on the aged paper as well as Kraft paper. I also did Bathilda Boo in the 4 3/8 x 5 3/4 (A-2 size) card. She is by far my FAVORITE witch design. I hope you ENJOY.

BUSY BUSY BUSY... The machines are running non-stop and so are we. The first of the NEW primitive Kraft Wrap rolled off the line yesterday and is on its way to Simply Primitive in New Hampshire and the new samples are on the way to H2A's Fall Order Writing in Roanoke Indiana. I thought I would share a few pictures since we never seem to find the time to get it uploaded oursite.

We are pleased to announce that Iain and Iain of YCUK will be representing Monahan Papers for the Autumn/Winter show in London. I know we didn't have any pictures from the last London show but I did find a few more pictures of the NY Show with Monahan Papers and the WONDERFUL desks and table top accessories by Primitiques. I thought I would share a few more of those until I can post the London pictures. Enjoy...

This is the left side of the booth where we had a lot of Halloween Paper hanging. The Monahan Papers line now features 610 designs available in 11" x 17", 13" x 19" and gift wrap rolls 24" x 36". Custom paper is also available up to 42" wide x 150' long. Care to WALLPAPER??? We can make it. Black and white or full color.

The back right of the booth featured an entire series of mixed media Fractur art.

This is center back where we did some Revolutionary War themed paper and it moved into the mixed media Fractur paper. I just love Fractur.

The desks and candle holders are from Primitiques. They are simply WONDERFUL to work with as well as functional for everyday use. These pcs are currently in use in my home but Primitiques can take your order.

The NEW A-2 size cards we displayed on the table are the art of Monahan Papers, Arnetts Country Store, Stacey Meade and Amy Eshelman. We will have the cards on the Monahan Papers website and available for ordering soon in three different sizes. We also have gift tags/cards to coordinate with the wrapping paper.

The new FALL/Halloween rubber stamps were introduced in NY. The Christmas series will be available soon.

The New Kitchen Is Almost Done!!!

Big cheers for Beth and Bill. A few more leaks from the second floor into the kitchen. A little more drywall replaced. Another small leak behind a wall. A little more drywall and guess what? The kitchen is FINALLY coming together. I am pretty sure Ella is thrilled. No more take out or microwaved meals. YEAH!!!!! You never really know how much you appreciate a kitchen with water that doesn't flow from where the hanging lights are suppose to be. A stove that consists of more than sterno and matches. A garbage disposal that has more than a pets name attached to the end of it. A sink to wash dishes that isn't in the bathroom and a refrigerator that you don't have to travel to another room other than the kitchen to get a drink. And I don't mean use the ice machine and the filtered water. The connections for that are 20 feet away. In the beginning you just can't see your way through to the end of the project. Its never going to be done. The local Pizza Parlor knows you and your family by first name and they adopt you at meal time. Duncan Donuts has your standing breakfast order ready every morning and your debit card number on a post it next to the cash register. They can open the window and toss you the food since they know you never meant to spend your life eating breakfast in the family car. Kitchens are taken for granted. All I can say is I am thankful I have one. I would never have made it as a pioneer woman. Having said all of that the votes are in... Beth and Bill need to do my kitchen next. Take a look at this GORGEOUS cabinet they made and finished from SCRATCH!!!!!! This room is going to be a dream. Even Ella thinks so !!!

You neet the nicest people at the shows. I loved Wendy and Marcia from Tinsel Trading. The booth they had was amazing. While I was Drooling over the product they were showing they were looking in my booth. It was actually quite funny. I was naturally drawn to the wonderful products they have. The old world look and the vintage paper wares. We even laughed over some of the same artwork we both use. If you have never seen this company please check them out. Tinsel Trading is located just a hop skip and a jump from the Javit's center in NY City. Wendy Addison designed a line for Tinsel Trading and it is REALLY WONDERFUL. The quality is superb and the fact that they manufacture it right there in NY is amazing.

So what happened to May Day??? No sooner had I planned my day and the clouds came in and it began to rain. I could surely handle the rain but hey... its 47 degrees outside and its the first of May. What is up with that? Despite the bad weather I finished my paper baskets and love the way they turned out. I wasn't able to get the flowers for them as they were all wet but they do make lovely nests. I even added a paper feather to one as an accent.

We Are Packing For The Show - Sneak Peak

Elizabeth and I are BUSY BUSY BUSY packing Monahan Papers for the New York Stationary Show. Its only two weeks before we leave and we are designing, finishing projects and packing the boxes. I thought it would be fun to share a few new items featuring the artwork of STACEY MEADE!!! How exciting is that....... I am thrilled. Together Stacey and I are doing an entirely new Halloween line. Here are a few pieces of her artwork I turned into 11" X 17" wall pictures. The frame is by Beth and Bill at Primitiques. The picture can be popped out of the back if you want to change it out for each season. I love these frames. AND YES... before you email and ask these will be available in the new RUBBER STAMP LINE.

This is one of my favorite NEW items I have been trying to get done for a long time... Graveyard Cards. These are available as flat cards in a 5" X 7" or a postcard in 4" X 6". Each will come in a set of six with a quill all packaged inside a pitch envelope and closed with our own Monahan Papers Seal. The packaging will feature the artwork of the design inside and can be framed and used as cupboard print. There is NO WASTE here. WE ARE GOING GREEN with recycled hand dyed papers.

On December 27, 1947 The Howdy Doody Show debuted on NBC television with the voice of Buffalo Bob Smith. I wasn't born YET... but I do remember the reruns in the late 60's. Howdy Doody himself is a freckle-faced boy marionette with 48 freckles, one for each state of the union (up until January 3, 1959). The original Howdy Doody marionette now resides at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Beth and I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all our wonderful customers!!!! We truly APPRECIATE each and every one of you!!! Our Holiday Open House was a HUGE success. Although we experienced record rains with raging rivers behind the mill in PA the show did go on and due to customer support we will be leaving The Quill and Well show open until Dec. 20th. We are back from the show and finally rested so I thought I would share a few pictures with you. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the opportunity to exhibit at The Market Square Show. We got to visit with old friends and make some new ones as well.

This is the entrance to the show. Beth and I set up our booths together mixing our wares. This is the Samplers Country front corner with Beth's cabinet that Elizabeth bought displaying our smalls. I LOVE the color of this step back cabinet and it was perfect to show our new Christmas line.

This is the opposite corner with a look into Beth's booth. The mahogany chair in the front was a GREAT place to take a rest. LOL.

Beth had her new jewelry line "Timeless Threads" at the show and it was wonderful.

This is the new 2010 "Arnett's" Piece Beth and Bill did for this show.

Dan's booth "Fried Green Tomatoes" was great. The little Trick Or Treat candy corn man in the front came home with me. He is sitting ever so patiently waiting for Halloween on my dining room table. He has a LONG time to wait.

We Have Been REALLY Busy!!!

We have been really busy here at Samplers Country, Primitiques, Monahan Papers, M & M Dry Goodes and Primi Chic. The days don't seem to have enough hours in them. We are filling orders, prepping for our online trade show and designing new every day, fall and Christmas goodes for the upcoming markets. I thought I would give a shout out and let everyone know that we will have the new Primi Chic site up in about 30 days and we are VERY excited. We never seem to have enough time to work on it as we are always filling orders but we are alas... getting it done. Elizabeth (NOT Beth but my daughter)and I have been busy and we are orange ALL OVER. I do mean ALL OVER!!! We finished dying our samples and some of our fall inventory. Its been so cold that it has been perfect for us to run the dryers. The heat they give off has been wonderful. I thought I would share a picture of the new fall dyed pumpkins, pears and assorted gourds. I just love the Primitiques extra large bowl!!!!

Every now and then I get to participate in something outside the realm of my norm. While traveling this past winter to a trade show with my daughter I swapped emails via my iphone with a woman wanting to place an order on Monahan Papers. She wasn't sure what she wanted she just knew she wanted something. She would ask a question and my daughter Elizabeth would read it and I would dictate my reply. It was fun and I had no idea where it was going. Long story short... I was pumping gas in a small town in West Virgina when she asked if I would provide the elements for a book cover and design it based on a specific time period. Well... sure... thats easy enough for me to do since I have worked on projects like that before. Then came the kicker... It was for a book based on a TV show, based on a series of books. No problem I thought how hard could it be? Then came the name of the show "The Vampire Diaries". Well, that threw me for a loop as I sat there trying to connect my paper company to a TV show based on Vampires. To be honest, I have never watched the show so I didn't see the connection. As she explained it to me she needed it to reference the beginning of a time line which started with the Civil War. OK now that was easy to do. I have collected original documents for years and had just purchased an original that I myself had never seen. A "CERTIFICATE OF NONLIABILITY, TO BE GIVEN BY THE BOARD OF ENROLLMENT". Basically a draft document excusing a soldier from serving for a stated period of time. I had yet to decide which project to use it on and as fate would have it it became the basis for this work. We manipulate the documents making reference to names and dates that a customer needs and print it all here on our own presses. I completed the project and sent it on to the editor and publisher. The book won't be released until this fall but they have shot the cover and are taking pre-orders before it hits the book stores. It was fun to do and it really does go to show that you never know where a road can take you.

Our new Pocket Watch Fiber Art Jewlery Line is getting exciting! Our neighbor & jewlery designer/artist, Lori Primavera, from the Heron studio has agreed to join the team & combine her talents with our creative new mini sampler jewlery line... I'll shoot a pic of the combined effort soon to share. Stay tuned... it is very, very exciting!!!

We are sooooo happy & excited to offer this new and unique line of Fiber Art Jewlery... Created by a collaborative duo of artists... Ruthe Martz (the fiber artist) and Lori Primavera (the Jewlery Designer). I (Beth) simply contributed the pocket watch idea ;-)

So far, we have a humble sampling and are showing it as a necklace with a beautiful beaded chain by Lori. Stay tuned for hanging pendant designs and a full aray of necklace options.

Can You Say Freight?

Over the last several years I have been asked "No... Really... Do you do all that stuff?" I respond with the polite yes... roll my eyes and move on. I am not sure anyone can fully grasp the scale of what we do here unless they actually see what we do. Just yesterday a friend asked me what I was doing. It was 6:55 in the morning and as much as I would have loved to have said drinking coffee swinging on the porch with my feet up... that wasn't the answer. It was more like I am up in the rafters propping HUGE bags of peanuts up for later use talking to you like an idiot. Obviously I shouldn't have answered the phone having myself in such a precarious position. Oh well... if I fall whats one more broken bone. Add it to the list. Anyways... to make a long story short we are CONSTANTLY asked if we make our drieds ourself or "is this stuff from China?". Well... folks its NOT from China. Our wares are made right here in Troy MO. and in a partnership with farmers. Basically we take the cast off's that can't be sold to grocery stores or food producers like Ocean Spray. Ever wonder what happens to the pomegranates that Ocean Spray rejects for juice? Well look no further than my front door. Yesterday we took delivery from a farmer who had a ton (literally) of cast off fruit and vegetables. This artichoke has a brown spot, this apple has a blemish, this persimmon has a bad color to it. No problem... we can use it. Waste not want not and lets help out the American farmer in the process. So... having had all these questions over the years I thought I would share with you the scale of what we do to put it in perspective. Remember... this is but one load of produce and we do this all year long. Just wait until I show you the oven pictures. I completely understand the meaning of sweat shop when the ovens are running for days at a time and its 90 degrees outside. Not to mention its 105 in our building. GREAT in the winter time... HORRIBLE in the summer.

While we were moving freight yesterday someone actually stopped and asked us if we were in the "Pie Business". Hmmmm.... Maybe next year. LOL.

Primitiques' Primrose Days at the Mill is our Mid-Spring celebration Open House! Primitiques is open to the public as we are now our area's distributor of our goodes and have a wonderful selection of handmades in our showroom.

Primitiques & the many talented artists of the Heron Studios Gallery (aptly named after the HUGE heron that flies up and down this old mill's creek... and the same heron that sits on the peak of our garage and munches on our pond's fish!). The Heron Studios boasts artists of many different mediums, including oil painting, weaving, fiber arts and pottery, to name a few. They are a fun group of artisans and always gracious hosts! Primitiques Featured in Country Samplers' Home Tour 2010!!!

Our dear friends, Bruce & Ruthe Martz, had their home featured in Country Sampler's 2010 Home Tour Edition! We refinished the Martz' kitchen, built a lot of custom cabinets for them & upholstered the furniture featured in this edition. Wanted to share that with you all ;-)

We refinished the Martz' kitchen cabinets to be Primitiqued and built a custom plate cupboard that blends seamlessly with the kitchen remodel. We also created several upholstered make-do's and re-upholstered & repainted the legs of the Black Snowflake Loveseat shown in this magazine. We wish CS had mentioned that the Columbus Corner Cabinet was designed by me, Beth of Primitiques, Ltd. I custom designed that in collaboration with Ruthe Martz so it is truly a collaborative work of friendship and design. We hope you can pick up a copy of CS and see the many pages of unique Primitiques we have to offer you, too!!!

We (Bill & Beth of Primitiques) are so excited that we were asked by Country Business Magazine to be their May/June 2010 Vendor Profile! It was a whirl-wind week for us. We got a call last week from the editor of CB, Susan Wagner then, just a couple days later, we had a photo shoot at our mill! One picture is way too funny because the photographer wanted me holding the nail gun in our upholstery room! Look out!!!

We had our interview via telephone on Wednesday and believe the article about us will be in next month’s issue already. Please keep an eye out for it!!!

It Was A Snow Day... WEEK!!!!!!

So Elizabeth and I flew into the show and were greeeted by snow and then snow and again more snow and Beth. Beth... who was kind enough to pick us up and let us camp at her house for the weekend. Day one was great. Beth took us on a tour of Aston and the neighboring towns and we enjoyed that. We toured her mill and the "Artist Colony" that shares the building with her. Thats my word for it... Artist Colony. This great old mill that has been converted into artist spaces. When I say artist spaces I really mean it. I mean clean and organized spaces where theres a place for every thing and every thing has a place. My STUDIO has places called where it drops is I guess where it goes... today anyways. We'll move it when we need it on another day.

We enjoyed visiting Beth's studio/warehouse/storage/showroom/rooms with piles/packing area/painting areas... space as well. We were upstairs and downstairs. We went this way and that way and there were rooms for different things. Rooms with names and peoples names. Corners of assigned space. I got jealous and I wanted a space so I meandered through everyones space. Its always an adventure when you get to visit someone elses studio and they give you free reign to poke around. I was like a kid in a candy store. Elizabeth managed to find the couch in the breakroom area and kick back with magazines for a while. I on the other hand felt like Marlin Perkins being sponsored by Mutual Of Omaha on a National Geographic adventure into uncharted Amazon territory. Left free to explore and forage for myself. Which I did by the way. I made a point to capture something from just about every room. What can I say... I am a scavenger. It was great UNTIL.... The snow kept coming and coming and coming. Not a few inches but I think we had 28" when all was said and done. Here are a few pictures I took on my phone.

I took this one to show the first snowfall. We came back from setting up the show and this is what greeted us. Poor Bill had to shovel us a path so we could get into the house. We sat in the warm truck laughing while he stood knee high in piles of snow clearing an escape route for us. What a guy.

He cleared enough snow for us to get in, get our luggage and get out. We couldn't even stay at the house. There was toooo much snow. The roads were closing and we were afraid we wouldn't make it back to the show in the morning so off we went again. This time to a hotel close to the show. Here are a few views of the parking lot from my window. It wasn't pretty.

One shoe can Really change your life. This is the continuing SAGA of the tale of one shoe. First, I wish to THANK all of you for your kind emails and understanding as I continue on this "ONE SHOE" journey. For those of you who are unaware of the "ONE SHOE" journey... To make a long story short I suffered a broken ankle at Easter that failed to heal properly. Whether it was due to my lack of attention to follow Dr's orders or my bodies inability to heal properly, I don't know. I had the surgery after much delaying and hesitation on December 1st and find myself a "ONE SHOE" girl yet again.

This however is more frustrating than ever since I am also lacking the ability to bear weight on this ankle for six weeks else I risk yet another surgery. This does not bode well for a high energy woman with the inability to "NOT WORK" for even short periods of time. My life is now limited to the confines of the first floor of our three story home and relying on the good graces of others. Neither of which comes easily to me to say the least. I can only enjoy bossing my husband around for so long and that time has long since passed. Christmas shopping is limited to surfing for sales. Christmas decorating has become a mere thing of the past and did I mention my daughter is getting married on the 19th of December in our home with friends and family. Praise Jesus for wedding planners but that is another story. I just want to say again "Thank You" to all my wonderful customers who have been so patient with me over the last few weeks and the upcoming month. We are moving as fast as we can to satisfy each and every one of you. Well... as fast as my new scooter and FIRE ENGINE RED walker will let me. LOL. To all of you... have a Wonderful Season and ENJOY your ability to GET OUT AND SHOP since "ONE SHOE" REALLY can change your life!!!

Primitiques' 5th Annual Holiday Open House
Primitiques is open to the public just this one time a year! We are hosting our annual Holiday Open House in collaboration with our neighbors at the Heron Gallery Studios (The Heron Studios Art Show). Event's Press Release: The Heron Studios' Annual Holiday Art Show and Primitiques Reproduction Furniture Open House will be held Friday, November 13th and Saturday 14th 2009. Featured at Heron Studios are fifteen Delaware County artists exhibiting one of a kind works in a multifaceted array of media. Ceramics, jewelry, oil paintings, pastels, photography, wrought iron work, watercolors, fine woodwork, and wearable art are all on display within the inviting atmosphere of a converted cotton mill. The name Heron was chosen after a great blue heron was seen gliding through the intimate Chester Creek watershed nearby. Just up the stairs from Heron Studios is Primitiques, the venture of Beth and Bill Merryfield, creators of reproduction Early American Colonial furniture & Upholstered Make-Do's. Every piece is hand crafted then finished with hand-mixed milk paint to bring an authenticity and individuality to each furnishing. Their current inventory includes bowls, wooden smalls, candle accessories, tables, butteries, large cupboards, plate displays, Make-Do Chairs, and various shelving and cubbies. They are constantly building their inventory and reviewing new ideas with their dedicated staff.

Principle artists of the Heron Studios include Mary Gordon from Ruteledge, Marion Kassab from Media, and Lorri Primavera from Wallingford, PA. Now, the old mill, now called The Rockdale Industrial Center, is a creative retreat for seven women artists.

Mary Gordon's oil paintings of small towns and disappearing farming communities evoke a timeless quality in a contemporary realist style. Marion Kassab, a full time Art teacher at Hill Top Preparatory School, paints abstracted landscapes with an invigorating palette. Lorri Primavera's original works of contemporary jewelry are made of sterling silver, precious and semi-precious stones with a juxtaposition of colors and forms that gives her work a quirky beauty and diversity.

The other resident artists will also be featured. Donna Cusano, of Middletown, produces energetic pastel paintings of semi-abstracted landscapes and still life objects such as hot peppers and pastries. The whimsical and brilliantly colored ceramic tiles and mosaics by Carol Rydel, from Boothwyn, instill a sense of fun and humor that every member of the family can enjoy. Rounding out the roster are invited artists Joyce Berger, oil paintings, Camille Leavitt, wrought iron work, Pam Pawl- weaving & wearable art, Annie Sucheki, ceramics and Rob Porter, photography.

History buffs will love viewing this fine art and craft work in the mill, which has changed very little since it was first used to make cotton cloth and yarn over 150 years ago. Today, the artists at Heron and Primitiques depend on each other for friendship and artistic opinions as did the mill owners from long ago depended on many people's cooperation to make the mill run smoothly. This charming venue is the perfect place to see contemporary artists working in a historic setting.
